Tabor College of Higher Education and Churches of Christ in SA & NT are pleased to announce the launch of the Tabor Churches of Christ Study Centre. The inaugural coordinator of the centre is Rev. Mark Riessen, who currently serves as Coordinator for Mission & Community Engagement with Churches of Christ. “Churches of Christ are committed to working collaboratively with Tabor College of Higher Education as mutual partners, passionate about the formation of the next generation of Christian leaders,” says Mark Riessen. “We see this as a fantastic opportunity to contribute to an environment where vocational discernment and quality theological formation are nurtured. I am really looking forward to working closely with the students and faculty.”

The Centre is a joint undertaking by both Tabor and Churches of Christ, and has three main objectives:

(i) to teach denominational and ministry-focussed subjects (e.g., Churches of Christ History and Polity) as part of Tabor’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses,

(ii) to research in areas which are of mutual interest to Churches of Christ and Tabor College of Higher Education, and

(iii) to identify and provide pastoral care, advice and direction to students from Churches of Christ who are studying at Tabor and who may be considering ordination or a ministry vocation with the denomination.

It is anticipated that the Centre will bring a number of benefits to both organisations by providing a stronger point of connection between the work of the denomination and the work of the college. “The School of Ministry, Theology and Culture at Tabor exists to serve the needs of the churches in Adelaide, Perth and around the country,” says the Head of School, Dr Aaron Chalmers. “We are looking forward to the opportunity of making a positive contribution to the life of Churches of Christ here in South Australia, and are confident that their presence here on campus will enrich the lives of our students by providing them with new opportunities.”

Dr Greg Elsdon, State Minister of Churches of Christ in SA & NT, will help oversee the establishment and functioning of the centre. “This collaboration in theological education and ministry formation is not just a pragmatic strategy of convenience. It grows out of a fundamental Christian commitment to partnership in the mission of the Kingdom of God. Churches of Christ see this new venture with Tabor as a means of contributing to the education and faith formation of South Australia’s Christian communities, and as a means of enriching our own experience and practice of faith.”

The official launch of the centre will take place on Wednesday, 24th February at 7:30 at Tabor College of Higher Education – Adelaide Campus (181 Goodwood Road, Millswood). All members of Churches of Christ and Tabor are welcome to attend.

As a multidenominational college, Tabor is keen to work in partnership with all of the churches of South and West Australia. Requests for further information or conversations can be directed to the Head of the School of Ministry, Theology and Culture, Dr Aaron Chalmers (achalmers@adelaide.tabor.edu.au)
